Each pillar pairs one of ten heavenly stems (yin/yang × Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) with one of twelve earthly branches (the zodiac animals). The year pillar speaks to ancestry and first impressions, the month pillar to career and parents, the day pillar to self and spouse, and the hour pillar to ambitions, children, and later life.
Reading starts from the Day Master: is it supported or exhausted by the season it was born into? From there, the five elements sort into what feeds you, what you produce, what you control, and what controls you — a map of temperament that classical practitioners also extended to directions, climates, and environments.
BaZi — "eight characters," also called the Four Pillars of Destiny — is the classical Chinese system of reading a life from the exact moment of birth. Your birth year, month, day, and hour each form a pillar of one heavenly stem and one earthly branch; the resulting eight characters describe your elemental constitution, strengths, and the timing of your life's seasons.
The hour pillar changes every two hours (the twelve traditional double-hours), so knowing your birth time within an hour is enough. Without any birth time you still get three pillars — including your Day Master, the center of the chart. Charts calculated near a double-hour boundary (e.g., 11 pm) are worth double-checking with both hours.
The heavenly stem of your day pillar — one of ten combinations of yin/yang and the five elements (Yang Wood through Yin Water). It is the "self" of the chart: all other stems and branches are read as resources, output, wealth, influence, or peers relative to your Day Master.
Dayun are ten-year luck pillars that overlay your natal chart. A chart with strong career signals may only cash them in when a supportive cycle arrives — which is why classical readings treat timing as seriously as character. The calculator shows the cycle you are in right now and when it ends.
