How to read your Saju chart

Each pillar pairs one of ten heavenly stems (yin/yang × five elements) with one of twelve earthly branches (the zodiac animals). The year pillar describes your roots and early environment, the month pillar your parents and career season, the day pillar yourself and your partner, and the hour pillar your inner world and later life.

Korean readers start from the Day Master (일간) and ask: is it strong or weak? Which elements feed it, which drain it? A chart heavy in one element and missing another isn't “bad” — it simply tells you what to seek out and what to be careful with, in people, in work, and in the places you live.

Frequently asked questions

What is Saju (사주)?

Saju — short for Saju Palja (사주팔자, "four pillars, eight characters") — is the Korean practice of reading a person's destiny from the exact moment of birth. Your birth year, month, day, and hour each form a "pillar" of one heavenly stem and one earthly branch, giving eight characters that map your elemental makeup, temperament, and life timing.

Is Saju the same as BaZi?

They share the same calculation — both derive four pillars from the Chinese sexagenary calendar. BaZi (八字) is the Chinese tradition; Saju is how the practice developed in Korea, where it remains part of everyday life: many Koreans consult a saju reader before marriages, career moves, and new years. Interpretation styles and emphasis differ between the two traditions, but your chart itself is identical.

Do I need to know my birth time?

You can calculate a meaningful chart with just your birth date — that gives you three of the four pillars, including your Day Master. The hour pillar adds precision about your inner life, later years, and relationships with children. If you don't know your birth time, start without it; you can ask family or check birth records later.

What is a Day Master (일간)?

The heavenly stem of your day pillar — one of ten combinations of yin/yang and the five elements (e.g., Yang Wood, Yin Fire). It represents you at the center of the chart; every other element is read as a resource, output, wealth, authority, or peer relative to it.

What are daeun (대운) — the 10-year luck cycles?

Daeun are ten-year periods that color everything in your chart. The same chart can feel blocked in one cycle and effortless in the next — which is why Saju readings focus as much on timing ("when") as on character ("what"). Our calculator shows which cycle you are in right now.

Can Saju tell me where I should live?

Traditional Saju links your element balance to directions and environments — someone lacking Water may thrive near coasts, a strong-Fire chart may seek cooler, calmer places. Beorra takes this further by combining your Saju element profile with astrocartography (your planetary lines mapped onto Earth) to score 400+ cities for your specific chart.
